Welcome to Saturday Science
  Welcome to our site

The underlying philosophy of the Summer/Saturday Science Academy is to provide underrepresented groups of students in grades eight through twelve with increased knowledge, skills and interest in science and mathematics. Within this context, the intent is to provide new understanding and motivation for the sciences in order to increase self confidence and interest in science and mathematics. The end result will be actualized by their increased enrollment in higher level courses (Advanced Placement) leading to further success in post secondary programs of study in science and engineering. The Academy is a mechanism that provides supplementary experiences for participating students to become armed with the knowledge, skills and self confidence needed for success at the post-secondary level in college and university programs that can lead to professional careers in science, mathematics and engineering.

The Saturday/Summer Science Academy began in the Summer of 1989 with only fifty-eight ninth grade students. Enrolment has continued to grow over the past 20 years with hundreds of students joining us each Saturday, and even more during the summer. Students enrolled in this program have found it to be a beneficial opportunity; preparing them for their high school courses as well and laying the necessary foundation for college.

The Academy is a program for underrepresented students (African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Females, etc.) who show an aptitude for mathematics and science. An integral part of the program is the enrichment of skills and knowledge in the areas of mathematics, science and technology that goes above and beyond what is available to them at their home school. The focus is upon developing keen problem-solving skills and hands-on learning experiences as they relate to the fields of science and mathematics.

Recently, we have joined forces with SECME: and engineering and science enhancement program. Through field trips, guest speakers, specific learning activities, and competitions, the SECME students get a clearer view of the real world of engineering. Since students meet on Saturday, or during the summer, and are drawn from across the entire district of more than 250,000 students, Saturday Science has the distinction of being the only non-school SECME program in the SECME alliance. Students who enroll in the Saturday/Summer program have the opportunity of joining this SECME class.

Enrolled students who successfully complete the coursework will receive an *elective credit in science. Official school transcripts will reflect the elective coursework, and may be used to enhance the cumulative grade point average.

*elective credits do not count for graduation. The State of Florida requires 3 credits in core science course work. Elective credits do not count as core credits in science.
